If you have never been to a house concert, you really need to do yourself a favor and go to one as soon as you can. Over the years, I have heard about various artists who would be appearing at “house” concerts via public radio (WMNF is my station of choice) and wondered how it worked. I mean really, going to a strangers house to sit with a bunch of other strangers and listen to music in the living room. Suffice to say, I struggled with the concept. Then we met Becky Abel who is really kind of a force of nature in downtown Lakeland and she convinced us to give it a try. Becky and her husband Tom are “Among Friends”, and they host concerts at their house. The talent is top level and the intimate setting is a wonderful experience. You get to interact with the performers as well as chat with them between sets. There is always a spread of food, so you get fed and then you get a great show. We have been to two concerts and they were both great shows as well as great evenings (and the “strangers” turned out to be pretty nice folks and some have become friends).
Suggested donation is $15.00 – $20.00 per person and you won’t find this kind of value for your entertainment dollar anywhere else (by the way, 100% of the donations go to the performers).
